Community Snow Shoveler Kit
Many seniors in Edmonton are unable to find affordable snow shoveling. Some have told us that they no longer know their neighbours and that it is hard to connect with younger people.
The South East Edmonton Seniors Association is looking at ways to mobilize neighbours to shovel snow for a senior on their block. If you are unable to do this as a volunteer, consider offering your services for a fee. Individuals under 18 are welcome with their parents’ consent. Parents are expected to monitor the quality of the service.
This kit provides templates for a flyer and a service agreement. We have applied what we learned from other community snow shoveling programs. This kit may help you set up a mutually beneficial match with a senior in your neighbourhood. SEESA is willing to provide you with 20 personalized flyers and 3 blank contracts at no cost.
Many seniors want to pay monthly, others by the job. We recommend a range from $70-$100 a month based on the size of the area you are expected to shovel and whether or not ice removal is required. If you want to work by the job, $10/hour may be a fair rate. It is up to you and the senior to negotiate the price, job specifications and method of payment.
Also, please call me if you meet a senior that may require additional supports.
This is the first time such a program has been attempted in Edmonton. We would like to know if you found any seniors to shovel for. You may also want to offer your services to people with disabilities. We would also like to hear your feedback on how this process is working. Please call me if you have any questions, comments or ideas.
Thank you for your willingness to be of service to an elderly neighbour!
